Overview

Blogs are difficult to assign ratings to because they offer different things to different people. For instance, I could be looking to read a blog on liberal political views and have different desires for the function of the blog than my own brother. I like seeing conservatives say things that are blatantly prejudice and be able to laugh at them while someone provides light commentary and sparse humor. However, my brother prefers to hear about the Democratic Party’s shortcomings when it comes to putting forth liberal policy. Although we both like liberal blogs there is no way for us to give the same judgment because we have different priorities. I chose to research the best NBA blogs and give a top 5, but I must first give my criteria.

1. Content
2. Comedy
3. Coherence
4. Message
5. Creativity

I will list the blogs in rank from worst to best.

5. Sekou Smith’s Hang Time Blog http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/

Content wise this is one of the strongest blogs on this list. Since it is featured as a link on NBA.com there is a certain amount of professionalism demanded from the blogger. Because of this the blog provides interesting looks into interviews and statistics that cannot be found anywhere else. However, there is little to know truly good color commentary on the sight, and the title of the blog does not match it’s content. The layout of the blog is also very customary of a professional blog, and makes you feel as if you can get the same information off of the NBA.com sight itself. Finally, Smith does not have a concise message. Rather, he bounces from statistics and interviews with the occasional commentary on players who do or do not get enough respect.

4. Charles Barkley http://charlesbarkley.com/

Charles Barkley is one of the NBA’s greatest television personalities. Because of this his blog is very self-serving, not that I’m complaining. He features clips from his show Inside the NBA. He also has a great feature on his site called rant and rave where he discusses hot topics in the NBA and their greater cultural consequences. This gives him a clear and concise message that you can follow if you frequent his blog. On the other hand the content stray’s from the NBA and he spews near facts (estimation’s on certain statistics versus facts).

3. NBA Off-Season http://nbaoffseason.com/

This blog is probably the best rounded on this list. It has a heavy pro- Michael Jordan feel, and the author is not afraid to spew controversial topics on the NBA’s star. Because this sight is not linked on NBA.com it does not have to be held accountable for the more offensive posts (i.e. the comments left about Jimmer Fredette). At the same time the blog flip-flops on key issues like who should be the MVP and muddles it’s love hate infatuation with the Miami Heat.

2. Get Banged On http://getbangedon.com/

This blog gets the nod as number 2 for 2 reasons, coherence and creativity. This site offers little to nothing in the department of informed commentary and overall message. Instead, it is devoted to bringing you people getting dunked on all over the basketball world. Basketball purists probably won’t like this blog, but the dedication to an exciting aspect of the game is more than admirable. They also do a great job of keeping updated everyday and bringing new excitement.

1. All Ball Blog http://allball.blogs.nba.com/

This blog snatched number 1 because of it’s great integration of content and Humor. When you read it you do not feel that an opinion is being pushed at you, however some of the clips posted are truly funny. Also, Micah Hart created a thread of posts labeled the Horry scale where he analyzes the most impressive game winning shots on his own scale, which is truly original. The blog keeps you informed as well as amuses you, 2 thumbs way up.
